The Kenton County Public Library serves as a vital community resource, offering access to information, technology, and lifelong learning opportunities. With a strong commitment to public service and innovation, the Library is recognized as a leading institution in the region.

As a cornerstone of the Northern Kentucky community, our Library is more than books — we are a vibrant, innovative institution dedicated to learning, connection, and inclusion. This is your opportunity to help shape an organization where culture, equity, community engagement and employee development are top priorities.

Join a Team that Values People, Community, and Connection

At the Kenton County Public Library, we believe the heart of great library service starts with great people. We’re looking for a Special Services Librarian who is welcoming, detail-oriented, and excited to support the unique services that set our library apart. If you enjoy helping patrons navigate resources like meeting spaces, passport services, and testing appointments, and take pride in ensuring our public spaces run smoothly and feel inviting, this role offers a meaningful opportunity to shape standout experiences across the branch.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide welcoming, professional service to patrons at all public service points.
  • Coordinate the reservation, setup, and overall management of the library’s meeting and event spaces.
  • Ensure requests follow library policy, communicating approvals or declines clearly and courteously.
  • Maintain attractive, functional public spaces in collaboration with maintenance and IT staff.
  • Recommend improvements to services, furnishings, technology, and procedures to enhance patron experiences.
  • Manage daily operations of the Pearson VUE and GED Testing Center, including proctoring, training staff, and coordinating schedules.
  • Oversee the branch’s Passport Acceptance Facility, serving as a passport acceptance agent and supporting newly trained agents.
  • Ensure all special service areas operate in full compliance with State Department and Pearson VUE regulations.
  • Partner with the Public Relations Department to promote meeting spaces and specialized library services.
  • Participate in branch management discussions and contribute to systemwide committees.
  • Serve as Manager on Duty of Staff in Charge of the branch in the absence of supervisory staff.
  • Help maintain a safe, orderly environment by enforcing library policies consistently and professionally.
  • Compile monthly statistics and reports to support effective operations.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures to keep the library welcoming and well-organized.
  • Perform other job-related tasks as needed to support department operations.

What We’re Looking For

  • A warm, empathetic disposition, and a good sense of humor.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and with patience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with patrons, coworkers, and community partners.
  • The ability to work independently, take initiative with limited supervision, and collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities, with the capacity to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility, openness to innovation, and an eagerness to adapt to change.
  • A service-minded approach and confidence in working directly with the public.
  • Knowledge of library services, resources, along with an understanding of the Kenton County community or a willingness to learn.

Qualifications Required

  • Master of Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited university.
  • KDLA certification (or ability to obtain) at the level required for this position, and the ability to maintain it.
  • Training and experience in library work or a related field.
  • Demonstrated customer-service experience, patience under pressure, and comfort interacting with a wide range of patrons.
  • Prior experience with test proctoring and/or passport services preferred.
  • Experience with LibCal and other Springshare products desired.
  • Experience working in an urban environment desired.

Benefits

At the Kenton County Public Library, we value our employees and the important role each person plays in serving our community. Our benefits are designed to support your well-being both on and off the job.

Full-time employees enjoy:

  • Health Insurance: 100% employer-paid medical coverage for employees, with additional voluntary plans for dependents.

Why Work Here
