Job Description

This is a 5-day on-site role in Scottsdale, only considering local candidates and no exceptions to their on-site requirements. Can be flexible on start and end times, but the expectation is to work in the office daily. Looking for a hands-on manager from small or mid-size companies with a track record of tenure.

Manager of Software Engineering (Hands-On Leader)

Are you a roll-up-your-sleeves engineering leader who thrives on building great products while developing exceptional teams? We’re looking for a hands-on Manager of Software Engineering to lead two development teams and help evolve our growing digital product portfolio. This is a player-coach role — roughly 25% of your time will be spent in the codebase helping with architecture, mentoring developers, reviewing PRs, and occasionally jumping in to pair or troubleshoot alongside your team.

This role is ideal for someone who loves engineering but is even more passionate about developing people and delivering products in dynamic, small-to-mid-sized environments.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Stay Hands-On: Spend ~25% of your time contributing technically — providing code reviews, assessing pull requests, guiding developers through implementation details (e.g., sitemaps, reusable components), and helping shape architectural direction.
  • Lead & Mentor Engineers: Manage two agile software teams. Mentor engineers — especially in front-end areas like React — to build both skillsets and confidence.
  • Build & Evolve Process: Drive project execution while also shaping the engineering culture. We're not looking for rigid processes — we're looking for leaders who know when to introduce structure and how to evolve it as we grow.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with Product, DevOps, and Architecture to align roadmaps, solve technical challenges, and deliver scalable solutions.
  • Champion Best Practices: Guide decisions around design, code quality, technical debt, and documentation. Be a force multiplier for your team’s output and growth.
  • Support Deployment & Delivery: Partner with DevOps in improving CI/CD pipelines. Previous experience working in AWS environments and modern delivery workflows is a plus.

What We’re Looking For

  • 8+ years in software engineering
  • 2+ years managing engineering teams , ideally at a startup or small/mid-size tech company.
  • Have remained hands-on while in a manager role and can operate 25% of the time hands-on
  • Technical depth in front-end and back-end : You’ve worked with React, Node.js, or Java , and you're confident leading architecture conversations and mentoring in full-stack best practices.
  • Track record of mentorship : Especially in environments where engineering maturity is still evolving. You know how to teach, not just delegate.
  • Experience building SaaS or e-commerce platforms — a plus
  • Process-minded but not process-bound : You’re comfortable in ambiguity and can balance structure with speed.
  • Proficiency in CI/CD and AWS ecosystems : You know what good DevOps looks like and work well with platform/infra teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (or equivalent experience). Master’s is a bonus.
