The Catholic Church Musician will serve as a key part of the liturgical ministry, providing musical leadership and support for the worship services, sacraments, and other church-related events. This role involves planning, preparing, and performing sacred music in alignment with the teachings of the Catholic Church, fostering a spiritually enriching atmosphere for the congregation through music.
Liturgical Music Leadership :
Provide music for all Sunday Masses, special liturgies, and feast days (e.g., Christmas, Easter, Holy Week).
Coordinate and rehearse with choirs, soloists, and instrumentalists.
Select and arrange music that is appropriate to the liturgical season, aligning with the Church’s liturgical norms and the theological context of the Mass.
Sacramental Music :
Provide musical accompaniment for weddings, funerals, baptisms, and other sacramental events.
Work closely with families and clergy to choose appropriate music for sacramental celebrations.
Music Ministry Development :
Recruit and maintain volunteers for the parish choir, youth choir, and other music ministries.
Foster a spirit of collaboration and unity among choir members, instrumentalists, and the congregation.
Oversee regular choir rehearsals, ensuring preparedness for services.
Liturgical Planning :
Instrumental and Vocal Support :
Play the organ, piano, or other appropriate instruments during Mass and other services.
Administrative Responsibilities :
Maintain music inventory, sheet music, and other resources for the music ministry.
Assist in the budgeting process for the music ministry’s needs, including instruments, music, and equipment.
A strong knowledge of Catholic liturgy and its musical traditions.
Proficiency in at least one musical instrument (organ, piano, or other keyboard instrument). Additional instrumental skills (strings, brass, etc.) are a plus.
Experience in choral conducting and vocal arrangement.
Ability to read music and play by ear.
Experience working with both traditional and contemporary Catholic hymns and liturgical music.
