Mining Campaign Manager Southeast Alaska Conservation Council

The Southeast Alaska Conservation Council is seeking a Mining Campaign Manager to lead vital conservation work around mining in Southeast Alaska. The Mining Campaign Manager reports to the Executive Director and is tasked with developing and executing strategic, issue-driven campaigns to protect the lands and waters of Southeast Alaska. This role works closely and collaboratively with SEACC’s campaign staff and others internally as well as partners from external organizations.

In coordination and collaboration with the SEACC team, you’ll work to further SEACC’s mission and vision in these key areas:

Development of strategic mining campaigns:

• Monitor and watchdog existing and planned mining projects and policy;
• Track and monitor public notices, news and announcements, and legislation pertaining to mining policy and mine development in Southeast Alaska;
• Identify regional environmental threats from mining activities in alignment with SEACC’s mission and priorities;
• Develop positions and campaign strategies on mining issues in alignment with SEACC’s mission and values.

Execution of campaigns and project management:

• Serve as project manager of mining campaigns, track deadlines and tasks including managing up and out to colleagues on collaborative projects;
• Develop campaign goals and tactics in alignment with SEACC’s mission and values;
• Identify, track and report measurable outcomes and progress.

Public outreach and organizing:

• Engage with community members, elected officials, Tribal representatives, other environmental organizations, and special interest groups on SEACC’s mining priorities and concerns and organize them to take collective action;
• Work with policy and communications staff to develop and disseminate informational and educational resources;
• Use grassroots organizing tools to engage key audiences to advocate for priority issues.

Build relationships and partnerships: 

• Participate in regional and statewide coordination meetings with other environmental nonprofit groups;
• Work with SEACC staff to further improve and grow efforts around engagement and outreach with key communities and special interest groups.

Represent SEACC publicly:

• Represent SEACC at public events, including informational events, forums, public meetings, conferences, festivals and fairs, etc.;
• Act as a spokesperson for SEACC with media, governments and communities;
• Represent SEACC in public processes, including testifying and attending government led meetings or workshops;
• Engage in direct lobbying with elected officials.

The strongest candidates will have many, but not all, of the following qualifications:

• Confidence stepping into a public-facing leadership role while working with both grassroots community members and grasstops partners;
• A background in environmental policy, and/or grassroots/grasstops campaigns;
• Professional experience or study in environmental science, natural resource management, ecology or related fields;
• Familiarity with Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and/or Department of Natural Resources permitting and public processes;
• Familiarity with municipal and Tribal government processes;
• Effective communication skills (written and oral), ability to quickly understand, translate, and communicate issues and policy solutions the general public can understand and engage in;
• Proactive problem solving skills, demonstrated people skills, and experience untangling tough social issues and working to bring people together to effectively advocate for shared conservation objectives;
• Excellent time management and comfort with planning, prioritizing, troubleshooting, and moving tasks forward while coordinating in all directions, especially across lines of difference (by building trust and rapport through warmth, humility, optimism, humor, etc.);
• Desire to work with diverse populations, , a genuine interest in the people and places of Southeast Alaska, and the ability to sustain a high level of energy and engagement over community visits lasting several days;
• Knowledge of and/or interest in learning Southeast Alaska Indigenous languages, culture, cultural protocols, and knowledge systems to support the outcomes that best fit our region, and capacity to connect and build relationships with Native groups, Tribal representatives, and Indigenous community members and leaders to further conservation and equity objectives.

Compensation: This role is a full-time position, and the salary range for this role is between $69,000 - $76,000 with exact salary dependent upon experience.

• In addition, the Executive Director closes the office between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day each year as a thank you to the staff!

Where you will work: SEACC’s office is located in Juneau, Alaska. The nature of this role requires the candidate to be located in Juneau. While we expect this role to work out of the SEACC office in Juneau, we do have a flexible hybrid work policy that may be utilized.

Work Travel: This role will include some required work travel to organize in communities throughout Southeast Alaska, represent SEACC at community events, and participate in regional and statewide coalition meetings. 

Desired Start Date: As soon as possible but flexible to the needs of selected candidates.
