Job Description

Cable East is seeking a skilled Directional Drill Operator to join our underground construction team. This role involves operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install conduit and cable systems for telecommunications networks. The ideal candidate has a strong background in drill operation, site safety, and underground utility work.

Responsibilities

• Operate horizontal directional drilling equipment to install underground telecommunications infrastructure (fiber optic and coaxial).
• Read and interpret project plans, utility maps, and construction drawings to determine drill path and bore placement.
• Coordinate with foremen, locators, and crew members to ensure safe and accurate bore paths.
• Perform daily equipment inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs to ensure proper operation and safety compliance.
• Identify underground utilities and work with utility locators to avoid service interruptions or damages.
• Set up and break down drill sites, including traffic control measures, bore pits, and job site safety setups.
• Troubleshoot issues with drilling operations and adjust bore plans as necessary.
• Maintain clean and organized job sites, adhering to all safety protocols and environmental regulations.
• Mix and manage drilling fluids (mud) appropriately based on soil conditions to ensure efficient and safe borehole performance.
• Complete documentation such as job reports, bore logs, and maintenance records.
• Travel regularly throughout the Metro Atlanta area and occasionally to surrounding states for out-of-town projects.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience operating horizontal directional drills (Ditch Witch, Vermeer, or similar equipment).
• Strong understanding of underground utility construction and directional boring techniques.
• Ability to read and follow utility prints and locate markings accurately.
• Comfortable working in varying weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
• Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA safety standards and HDD best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with telecom-specific projects (fiber-to-the-home, backbone fiber, coaxial).
• Locator experience and ability to operate locating equipment.
• Familiarity with hydro/vacuum excavation methods and equipment.
