About Neion Bio:

Neion Bio is harnessing nature’s best protein factory to upend various multi-billion dollar markets and ultimately transform human health. Through genetic engineering, we’re exploiting living bioreactors to produce highly valuable complex proteins, from cosmetics to therapeutics, using existing industrial-scale infrastructure. Our platform can rapidly and scalably produce almost any protein, provide national resilience to drug shortages and de-risk complex supply chains, and ultimately take advantage of novel biological environments to solve unmet medical needs. 

Role Summary:

We are seeking a versatile animal care researcher who is motivated to contribute to the growth of Neion’s avian research program, while continuing to learn on the job. This role involves hands-on, onsite care and handling of chickens and collection and processing of samples in the laboratory, planning and executing of studies, and detailed record-keeping. It may require occasional weekend shifts to continuity of care and study execution. This is a start-up, so be prepared to wear multiple hats. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Aviculture Must be comfortable safely handling chickens in a research setting. Involves managing small flocks; egg collection and incubation; hatching of chicks; and stage specific supportive care of growing chicks. 
• Study Planning: Communicate with team members to plan studies. Communicate animal health and study updates to supervisor and team members.
• Study Execution: Carry out procedures, for example: safely restrain and give IV injections, collect and process eggs and samples, and ensure lab delivery. Communicate animal health and study updates to supervisor and team members.
• Record Keeping: Establish and maintain SOPs, and maintain timely and accurate study and animal records to ensure data integrity and regulatory compliance
• Regulatory Compliance: Proactively ensure that records and research areas are prepared for IACUC and USDA inspections 
• Supportive care and intervention: Productively communicate with veterinary and animal care staff and promptly respond to emergent conditions.

Required Qualifications:

• 2 to 4 years experience providing hands-on animal care in a research, small animal clinical, laboratory, or zoological setting including, with a strong preference for chicken or other avian experience
• Undergraduate degree in biological sciences or related field; OR from a Veterinary Technical program accredited by the AVMA and have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) or a state Licensed Technician Veterinary Exam (LVTE)
• Ability to operate with quiet confidence and competence to promote a culture of care
• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor and Neion team members as well as external veterinary and care staff.

Desired Qualifications

• 3+ years experience working with avian species, especially chickens/poultry
• Graduate degree in biological sciences, veterinary medicine, or related field, e.g. Masters, PhD, or DVM
• Experience recording data in an electronic lab notebook
